Daniel Davis: Pain, Hunger, Sorrow

My performance-work echoes not only The Jewish or Israeli Trauma but – The Human Trauma

Sacrifice is a voice-performance which evolved from the voice excerpts in the performance Woman of the Pots.
Woman of the Pots was a family collaboration which was initially presented, on August 1990, at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
For this collaboration Daniel Davis created a magnificent spatial installation comprised from seventy ceramic-works amidst which I performed together with   both our children – Shahar and Yasmin Davis.

I sensed an urgency to commemorate Daniel`s outstanding life`s work and I fulfilled this urgency with the retrospective exhibition – “We Belong to the Earth”, the book – “Daniel Davis” and the renewed booklet – “Imagination of Potters”. When I decided to perform Sacrifice amidst his ceramic-works, as I performed decades earlier, amidst his installation of Woman of the Pots, it was, indeed, an expression of longing for our partnership.

But after all is the fact that between the years 18 and 21 of his life, Daniel served in the army, in the obligatory military service, where the cause of his untimely tragic death occurred. – My choice to perform Sacrifice was also an assertion of my disdain of a social and political reality where ideologies are more sacred than human lives. – Daniel Davis died as a victim of a society which promotes the sacrifice of human lives for the sustenance of its ideologies.

Victor Petrov, organizer of “Navinki02″, wrote in the catalogue: “Concentrated emotions, plaintive singing and a scream, gesture, extreme emotionality. This is the inner dialogue of a screaming soul, a tale of time, reflections of one`s place in the world. The powerful vocal sounds accompanying it are like associations with femininity, love, and the origins of life.”
